ABOUT THE AUTHOR

After a successful used equipment sale and poker night (See related article below), the Los Alamitos High School Baseball Booster Club is readying their biggest event yet—a golf tournament complete with Los Al MLB baseball legends. As Los Alamitos High School head baseball coach Aaron Moore works the put in place a top notch coaching staff, the Boosters Club is busy raising money to help renovate the playing fields.

Scenic Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach is the setting for the 1st Annual Los Alamitos High School Legends Golf Tournament taking place Monday, April 19. Registrations are underway for this first annual event with proceeds that will benefit the Los Alamitos High School Baseball program.
A day of “Fun and Games” starts with check-in at 8:30 am. Golfers will tee off at 10 am using a Shamble format. Under Shamble rules, all players tee off and the best drive is then used by all golfers in the foursome to continue play on that hole. Players will also be able to vie for prizes in longest drive, closest to the pin, hole-in-one and putting contests.
Former Major League Baseball players and LAHS legends Craig Chamberlain, Greg Harris and Robb Nen are scheduled to appear and play in the tournament. Craig Chamberlain was a first round pick by the Kansas City Royals in the 1978 amateur draft and played two seasons with the Royals. Greg Harris enjoyed a 14-year major league career, highlighted by pitching for the San Diego Padres in the 1984 World Series and playing for the Red Sox for five seasons. He is perhaps best known for being the only major league pitcher in the modern era to pitch with both his right and left arms. He is also Assistant Coach at Los Alamitos High. Robb Nen played in the majors for ten seasons starting in 1993 and became known as one of the best relievers of his era, compiling 314 saves and a 2.98 ERA during his career with the Rangers, Marlins and Giants.

The “Fun and Games” will continue during a 19th Hole cocktail hour followed by a gourmet buffet featuring tri-tip, salmon and roast turkey. During the cocktail hour and dinner, guests will be invited to participate in a silent auction, raffle and games. Members of the community who don’t want to play a round of golf but would like to catch up with old friends and alumni can come for the cocktail hour and buffet only.
Registration fees are $205 and include a round of golf, box lunch, no-host cocktail hour and a buffet dinner. The dinner-only option is also available for $60. Special golf packages will be available for players who want to join one of the local legends on the course. Advertising and sponsorship opportunities are also available for local businesses.

According to Kelly Ford-Harris, Fundraising Chair, Los Alamitos High School Baseball Boosters Club, the group has recently sponsored two other successful fundraisers. “Our Poker Fundraiser on January 23 was a royal flush of an event. We drew 62 players and raised more than $5,000 for our program. The big winners for that night include John Gleeson – 1st place – 40 inch Samsung HDTV; John Lazar – 2nd place – Four Angel tickets 12 rows behind 1st base on deck circle; Grant Stone – 3rd place – Four Angel tickets in Diamond Club section – courtesy of Eddie Kesky; Chad Stuart – 4th place – Four Angel tickets 10 rows behind the 1st base dugout – courtesy of Terry Humphrey. - 5th place - Michael Barr -  4 tickets and preferred parking to a Los Angeles  Chivas soccer game. The seats are located four rows back behind mid field and directly behind the Chivas bench. Tickets courtesy of Tom Panarisi. -Jason Cairns finished 6th and was the only high school baseball parent finishing in the top 8 spots. He won a “Pig Pack” from Naples Rib Company.”

The Boosters Club also recently sponsored a used equipment sale. According to Ford-Harris, That event generated $3,000 for the program.

For more than 40 seasons, the Los Alamitos High School baseball program has consistently produced outstanding players who have excelled on and off the field. To keep that tradition alive and well, first-year head coach Aaron Moore is spearheading a comprehensive renovation and upgrade of the Griffins’ fields and facilities. The Legends Golf Tournament, along with the poker night and the used equipment sale, will play a big part in reaching that goal.
