Heifer Project International is a non-profit agency whose mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. The fair this Sunday, November 15, will give Attendees an opportunity to purchase animals to be sent to families in third world countries. The idea is to provide a source of food rather than short-term relief. The families agree to pass on one or more of their animal’s offspring to another neighbor in need which creates an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance.
The event will be 8:30 am to 11:30 am at Good shepherd Presbyterian Church, 11600 Los Alamitos Blvd, in Los Alamitos. Their phone number is (562) 493-2553.
The fair, which is open to the community, will feature a free petting zoo, a bee keeper, children’s activities, compost worms, and weavers.
The church said in a statement “When You Donate a Bee Colony to Heifer International, a family in need receives: a beehive that can double fruit and vegetable yields; honey (provides nutrition); wax; an animal that requires little space; is low maintenance, and provides enough extra resources to sell at the market to help pay for food, clothes, school, and medicine.”
Kirk Brown, a church member involved with the fair said “We invite the community to join us to learn how they can help others in a green, sustainable way that has long term benefits and no political baggage.”
