This year’s Rose Parade Kaiser float features a playful and entertaining theme. It consists of children, all courageous fighters against life-threatening diseases, riding giant animals on a county fair-like carousel decked with wholesome fruits and vegetables. The eight children -- all Kaiser Permanente patients with significant illnesses such as cancer, sickle cell, asthma, and diabetes -- each have “magnificent tales of health.” One of these lucky riders is Seal Beach’s 17 year old Haley Ishimatsu.

Yesterday President Obama officially “pardoned” the National Thanksgiving Turkey and the bird began its first class cross country trip to Disneyland. Courage, a 20-week-old, 45-pound tom turkey, will be the honorary grand marshal in the "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” Thanksgiving parade down Main Street, U.S.A. Following today’s parade, Courage and his alternate, Carolina, will find a home at Santa's Reindeer Round-Up at Big Thunder Ranch in Frontierland, where they'll remain throughout the holidays and the rest of their lives.

What do we do on about December 25 and why do we do it?

Most Americans, Christian or not, will erect a tree in their living rooms, put all manner of lights and decorations on it, display mistletoe and holly trimmings around their homes, put up special lights and other decorations outside, mail Christmas cards and annual letters to friends and family, go to lots of parties and special church services, listen to special music, give gifts wrapped in special paper, and enjoy large dinners with family and friends. But, why?

Do we do it all because 2,000 years ago the son of God was born to a virgin in Bethlehem? Probably not.
