Back in December, ASB students announced over the intercom that ROP Video Production was bringing Griffin News back to Los Alamitos High School – and here it is!

Griffin News, a campus newscast shown at the end of each week in every classroom, was cancelled at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year due to the absence of a video production teacher. The cancellation was much to the dismay of the student body, who found the weekly videos not only informative but “another reason to look forward to Fridays”, according to Dominic Castillo, a senior.

But ROP (Regional Occupational Program) Video Production has found a new mentor, Anthony Cobbs. Under his leadership, upperclassmen have again begun creating the refreshing and enlightening newscasts that Los Al Griffins have loved for so long.

“[I’m] so glad Griffin News is back this semester,” said Alex Heitman, a junior. “And not just for the excuse to waste ten minutes of class. Most of the newscasts are pretty funny and after walking into class in the morning, it kind of wakes you up to watch an episode.”

Griffin News’ original purpose was to inform students of upcoming events, but the ROP Video Production students have turned it into something bigger. Aside from finding creative ways of telling teenagers about approaching dances and fundraisers, Los Alamitos High School’s video producers create small, humorous skits to make the episodes more interesting and memorable. They also film something called “Sidewalk Talk”, during which the producers ask random students on campus miscellaneous questions such as “What’s your best griffin noise?” and “What’s your favorite dance move?”. This particular segment is included in every episode.

The introductory episode of Griffin News for the 2012 spring semester was aired the first week of February. A few more extensive newscasts have followed.

From now on, Los Alamitos High School students can count on an episode of Griffin News each week.

The Los Alamitos Unified School District serves nearly 10,000 students in Seal Beach, Rossmoor, and Los Alamitos. The district includes Los Alamitos High School, a full service high school, Laurel High School, a continuation high school, McAuliffe Middle School, Oak Middle School, and six elementary schools. Mrs. Meg Cutuli is the current President of the Board of Education. Dr. Sherry Kropp is the Superintendant of the Los Alamitos Unified School District.
