A new state of the art athletic training and conditioning facility has opened in Costa Mesa. This sports performance training program is open to all ages from 8 to adult, and like other similar facilities, focuses on speed, strength, and conditioning, rather than any sport specific skill development.

“It’s a fun and pretty good program, and it’s definitely helping me to be a better baseball player,” Rossmoor resident and Founding Athlete for the new facility, Ricky Apodaca, 11, told OC180NEWS. “In speed and acceleration, and balance, so you’re more centered when you hit the ball, so when you drive it, you’re able to get more power out of it.”

Athletes typically train two to three times a week, in groups no larger than eight athletes per coach. Training in small groups allows more personal one-on-one attention between coach and athlete, which ensures that each athlete will be able to get the instructions they need in order to improve. Athletes are grouped by age and skill level to best motivate and encourage training at optimal levels.

“At Velocity Sports Performance only the best coaches are hired to train athletes and adults,” Vice President Justin Davis told OC180NEWS. “We require our coaches to have a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or a related field, and to have Certified Strength and Conditions Specialist (CSCS) certification – the gold standard in the field.”

The 8,000 square foot facility is located on the border of Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, and includes a 25 x 15 yard indoor turf field, Olympic weight lifting areas and a 1,000 square foot state-of-the-art strength training area.

“Velocity is the place to be if you’re looking to get away from being an average athlete,” said Jeremy Operana. “Jaelyn has been a tremendous athlete and has always been the top player on all her teams. Since she has been at Velocity she turned into a different beast. Her overall athleticism has improved night and day and people and coaches have taken notice. Her speed and reaction has improved, her throwing velocity has increased, her pitching speed has improved and her batting power is off the charts for someone in her division. Most importantly her overall confidence has improved the most.”

“Jerian has improved greatly with speed, reaction and coordination,” continued Jeremy Operana. “He is preparing for fall football season. His work here at Velocity is showing on the NJB basketball court.
His coaches have noticed a more aggressive player in him. He went from averaging 1 to no steals a game to a minimum of 5 steals a game. He has been tireless on the court and we know it’s from his work here at Velocity. He is quicker to the ball, his reaction is quicker and his footwork is tremendously better.”

Velocity Sports Performance, located at 2777 Bristol, Costa Mesa, has built a business devoted to training athletes in every sport, at all ages and all skill levels.

“Athletes of any caliber can realize their potential through advanced training programs, scientifically designed to maximize human sports performance,” said Davis. “Velocity Sports Performance offers athletes from age eight through adult, semi-private and team-based sports performance training designed to help them increase speed, power and agility, while reducing the risk of sports-related injuries.”

While the training does not focus on the skills for specific sports, the improvement in overall athleticism, strength, and conditioning, can lead directly into better performance on the field or court.

“It’s helping my pitching by building arm strength and leg strength,” said Apodaca, who pitches for the Bronco Division of the Los Alamitos Youth Baseball program. “It’s the same thing as other programs I’ve been in, but at Velocity, they move at a quicker pace and the workout is more aggressive.”

The center will also offer specialized adult programs such as Adult Fitness, Golf Fitness, and Weight Loss Boot camps. All of the Adult Fitness programs deliver fast-paced, high-energy workouts structured for total body conditioning no matter the participant’s age or fitness level. Throughout the programs, strength, cardio and flexibility tests are used to gauge progress.

“We’re thrilled to bring a Velocity Sports Performance training center to Costa Mesa,” said owners Pat and Linda Archer. “We know Velocity Sports Performance will help local sports enthusiasts develop a competitive edge with regards to speed, agility and strength.”

“Until now, there was an underserved market in this area in terms of age-appropriate performance training for younger athletes.” says Sports Performance Director Jason Moreno. “It used to be that sports performance training programs were only available to professional and collegiate athletes, but today athlete’s start training earlier in order to be prepared to meet their dreams of playing elite sports. Velocity Sports Performance programs are specifically designed to give kids a foundation for reaching their greatest athletic potential in a safe and supervised environment, while putting the ‘fun’ back into their activities. Meanwhile, parents will see their kids’ self confidence grow.”
