The second semester of the Los Alamitos High School year provides a clean slate and plenty of new opportunities for students who wish for a fresh start.
While LAHS kicked off the new semester with a spring sports pep assembly, faculty members brainstormed ways to get more students involved academically and athletically. Club flyers popped up all over campus, and many teachers discussed the importance of ending the school year with good grades with their students.
“Your high school grades and behavior as a teenager can ultimately decide what your lifestyle is like later on,” Health teacher Rob Megill tells his students at the beginning of each semester. “So you have to make the right choices. Doing well in school offers so many opportunities to you.”
Each spring semester, Advanced Placement students have to register to take their end-of-the-year tests. Since AP classes usually finish with new material a month or so before summer break, students have plenty of time to study for these tests, which help determine what level they get placed in the following year.
But Los Alamitos High School doesn’t limit itself to just academics. The LAHS song team is currently in Florida for a competition, and the dive team is looking for new members. And while winter sports get a break from all their competitions, teams such as wrestling, water polo, and basketball can be expected to have some big games pretty soon.
The drama department also celebrates the new semester with two performances: “Rabbit Hole”, the emotional story of a couple coping with the loss of their son, and “Flowers for Algernon”, a play based on the classic novel about a mentally challenged man who undergoes an operation that turns him into a genius. Drama classes also hope to perform a revised version of George Romero’s zombie movie “Night of the Living Dead” in late spring.
Community service opportunities keep turning up as well, with the annual Race on the Base approaching and St. Isidore’s Historic Plaza looking for volunteers to distribute food on weekends.
With so many things to do and prepare for, the 2012 spring semester will be very busy – but keep an eye out for the inevitable achievements of Los Alamitos High School’s talented and dedicated student body.
