Online Job Posting Report For January

In this exclusive OC180NEWS monthly report, OC180NEWS looks at managerial online job postings during January 2012.

Since July 2009, this survey has tracked online job postings in 30 major metropolitan areas. Four California areas – Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Riverside – are included in the survey.

Three of the four California cities included in the online job posting survey had more job openings in January than December. The one city which did not have more job openings, Los Angeles, was down slightly from the prior month.

The job posting survey, which is prepared by a private company, is not seasonally adjusted, so it is necessary to put the numbers into their historical context. This survey includes December to January data for three years: 2010, 2011, and 2012.

The seasonal patterns for three of the California cities (Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Diego) are the same for the December/January change in both 2009/2010, and 2010/2011. The exception, San Francisco, had job gains in the December 2009/January 2010 period, but fewer job postings in the December 2010/January 2011 period.

Of the four California cities included in the survey, San Francisco has had the most jobs per capita since the beginning of the survey in 2009. The index of online jobs in San Francisco increased from 106 in December, to 111 for January 2012. While the January index value is lower than the 113 score for October 2011, January was the first month with an improvement in jobs offered in San Francisco. The San Francisco index hit its high of 127 in March 2011.

Nationally, the index of online job postings of 111 for San Francisco is behind Washington D.C. and Boston. The job postings in the nation’s capitol increased from 139 for December, to 143 for January. In Boston, job postings increased from 123 in December, to 129 for January.

Strong job openings in San Diego, plus a small decrease in Los Angeles, returned San Diego to the second place slot among the four California cities. The job posting index in San Diego moved up from 44 for December, to 50 for January. Meanwhile, the index of online job postings for Los Angeles fell from 46 in December, to 45 for January.

Riverside is the lowest of the four California cities, and is lower than every other city in the survey. But, Riverside had more job postings in January than December and it was the second consecutive increase for the Inland Empire city. The Riverside online job posting index moved up from 19 in December, to 21 for January. The high for the online job posting index in Riverside was May and June, 2011 when the index was at 25. It had fallen steadily until November when it dropped to only 18. The results in January brought the index back up to 21.
Only 10 of the 30 cities in the national survey had more job postings in January 2012 than they had in the previous month. As noted above, 3 of the ten improving cities are in California.

“There has not been a significant improvement in hiring yet in 2012,” says Jay Martin, COO, JobSerf. “And managerial recruitment activity remained close to 2007 levels for much of last year.”

The cities with the most per capita hiring gains in 2011 included: Nashville (+19 points), Memphis (+13 points) and Houston (+10). The biggest losers in 2011 were San Diego (-11), Washington, DC (-8), New York City (-7) and Milwaukee (-7).

“We expect the job market in 2012 to remain very competitive for job seekers,” says Tony Lee, publisher, CareerCast.com. “Job hunters should determine which positions are the hardest for employers to fill, and then learn new skills, if necessary, to qualify for those jobs. Many companies are waiting for the economy to improve before ramping up new initiatives.”
