Going out for brunch with family, friends, or your significant other? Try The Original Pancake House, a breakfast restaurant in the city of Orange.
The Original Pancake House was started in Portland, Oregon by Les Highet and Erma Huekene, who collected recipes from all over the world in search for the perfect pancake. Les and Erma strongly believed that pancakes could be seriously delicious while still coming in a fun, unique variety.
The restaurant is easily accessible by bicyclists as well as those traveling in a car – my family and I were able to ride our bikes from home on the new North Santiago trail to Chapman Avenue, where one of the Original Pancake Houses is located. If you decide to cycle to the restaurant like we did, you’ll be grateful for the exercise; once you see the menu, you’ll want to order everything.
My family has visited The Original Pancake House several times, but this time was a memorable occasion. One of their seasonal specials was red velvet pancakes with cream cheese butter and powdered sugar, which immediately became an item on our order. My sister and I both chose the chocolate chip pancakes (a heartwarming favorite), which come with a tiny pitcher of chocolate sauce if the pancakes aren’t sweet enough for you already. And it wouldn’t be breakfast without bacon or sausage, so we also asked for a side of bacon to share among the table.
The red velvet pancake experiment was a success. The pancakes, after being spread with creamy butter, opened up to be a deep red that emitted sweet-smelling steam. The chocolate chip pancakes, which are served with a whipped cream topping, certainly fulfilled Les’ and Erma’s wish for the perfect pancake, as they were sweet, soft and flavorful all at once. The Original Pancake House’s bacon is unlike any other; instead of being cooked into short, crispy strips, it is served almost like the sliced ham you may have for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner – that is, thick and slightly chewy while still holding intense flavor.
But while the food was amazingly delicious, there were a few things that The Original Pancake House could have improved on. Their atmosphere, although comfortable and family-friendly, is a bit plain, and could be made more interesting to customers. A few more tables would be appreciated too, as the wait to be seated is often long, and the wait to be served even longer. Perhaps the other Original Pancake House locations have more tables – if not, it’s still worth the wait when you end up with the perfect pancake.
