Online Job Posting Report For December

In this exclusive OC180NEWS monthly report, OC180NEWS looks at managerial online job postings during December. since July 2009, This survey has tracked online job postings in 30 major metropolitan areas. Four California areas – Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Riverside – are included in the survey.

Even though according to California Employment Development Department data Orange County employment slipped in November (see related article below), three of the four California cities included in the online job posting survey had more job openings in December than November. The one city which did not have more job openings, San Francisco, was unchanged from the prior month.

The job posting survey, which is prepared by a private company, is not seasonally adjusted, so it is necessary to put the numbers into their historical context. This survey includes November to December data for three years: 2009, 2010, and 2011.

In 2010, three of the four California cities had fewer jobs advertised in December than November. The exception, Riverside, was unchanged between the two months. In 2009, there is no pattern in the November to December online job postings. Of the four California cities, one had a drop in jobs, two were unchanged, and one city had an increase in job openings.

Of the four California cities included in the survey, San Francisco has had the most jobs per capita since the beginning of the survey in 2009. The index of online jobs in San Francisco was unchanged at 106 in December 2011. Last year the job posting index fell from 126 in November to 117 for December. In 2009, the index was unchanged at 70 for both November and December.

Nationally, the index of online job postings of 106 for San Francisco is behind Washington D.C. and Boston. The job postings in the nation’s capitol dropped from 165 in November, to 139 for December. In Boston, the job postings fell from 135 for November, to 127 for December.

For the first time ever during the two and a half years of this survey, Los Angeles pulled ahead of San Diego for the second best California city for job postings. The job posting index for Los Angeles moved up from 43 for November, to 46 for December.

The November to December improvement in job openings for Los Angeles in 2011, contrasts with decreases in job postings during the same two months in both 2009 and 2010. Last year, the Los Angeles job posting index fell from 56 in November, to 48 for December. Two years ago, the index decreased from 35 to 33 during the same two months.

The job postings in San Diego for November and December increased from 43 to 44. Thus, starting from a tie with Los Angeles at 43 last month, the three point gain in Los Angeles was enough to push San Diego into the third place slot for the California cities included in the survey. Nevertheless, San Diego’s 2011 results were much stronger than in 2010 when the job posting index decreased from 59 in November, to 52 for December. In 2009, the San Diego index increased from 40 in November, to 44 for December.

Riverside is the lowest of the four California cities, and is lower than every other city in the survey. The high for the online job posting index in Riverside was May and June, 2011 when the index was at 25. It had fallen steadily since and last month stood at only 18. The results in December improved to and index value of 19.
