Last month we reported Orange County employment gains during September and October were the best in ten years. That was based on State of California data which showed a total of 26,200 more jobs in OC during those two months. In November, the state took back a few of those new jobs.
California Employment Development Department revised the preliminary September plus October job gains of 26,200, downward by 1,300 jobs. Not only that, but Orange County reported a loss of an additional 2,500 jobs in November, bringing the net job growth for September, October, and November to 22,400 net new jobs. Rather than a ten year record as it was with the previous two months, this lower number ranks as only the fourth best of the last ten years.
The results for November alone are much worse. In the last ten years, Orange County has only lost jobs during November twice. Beside the loss of 2,500 jobs in November 2011, the county lost 100 jobs in November 2009. The average of the last ten years is net job gains of 9,990.
“Orange County’s Total Nonfarm employment went down a little this last month,” an EDD Spokesperson told OC180NEWS. “This is after its large increase in October. It looks like there were decreases in Construction; Financial Activities; Professional & Business Services; Health Care & Social Assistance; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation; and Other Services. These seemed to be the big losers in most areas of the state. The industries that gained employment in Orange County in November were Trade (good Holiday hiring this year) and Education, including Local Government Education.”
The November results in other parts of California were much better than Orange County and it means OC lost ground in the drive to recover from the worse days of the Great Recession. In total, California added 47,600 jobs during November 2011, Los Angeles County created 10,400 more jobs during November, and down in San Diego, there were 8,000 more people working in November. EDD does not provide seasonally adjusted county numbers, so when we compare to the state total, we also use an unadjusted number.
From the highest employment levels to the lowest, during the Great Recession California lost a total of 1,653,600 jobs, or 11% of all jobs. With the gains in November, the state has replaced 592,800 of the lost jobs, bringing the net losses down to 7%.
In Los Angeles, the maximum jobs lost to the recession were also 11%. As of November 2011, the net jobs lost are down to 9%. In San Diego County, the largest job losses were 9%, but the November job gains, bring the net losses to only 5%.
In Orange County, the maximum recession job losses were 206,800 jobs, or 13% of all jobs. As of November 2011, OC net jobs lost were 10%. This means that during last month, there were 158,700 fewer people working in OC then there were during the highest level of employment which was December 2006.
