High School Student Volunteers Are Needed at the Race on the Base

Race on the Base

The importance of community service is enforced throughout Los Alamitos High School, and as it turns out, February 25, 2012 will become a rich source for volunteer hours.

The Southland Credit Union’s 31st Race on the Base will be held at the end of this winter on Los Alamitos’ very own Joint Forces Training Base. This annual event features seven separate runs, walks, and triathlons, with special divisions for kids and participants with disabilities. Although registering in the races requires a small fee, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Cancer Support Society, who co-hosts the 5K walk.

Volunteers are needed to help with registration, course monitoring, item drop-off, and setting up the vendor area. Teens and adults can also donate their time to handing out water to the participants as they pass course markers.

“You have no idea how grateful the runners are for the water that is handed out by the volunteers,” commented Cole Johnson, a junior at LAHS and a participant in last year’s Race on the Base 5K run. “Without the water and the motivating cheers that they provide, I’m not sure if I – or many of the other runners – would have been able to complete the whole course. You can actually tell which volunteers are from our high school, because they have the most spirit.”

If you’d like to help out at this winter’s Race on the Base or are interested in participating in a walk, run, or triathlon, visit www.raceonthebase.com and complete a volunteer or registration form. For friends and family who would like to observe the race, music, food stations, and children’s activities will be provided.
