Rossmoor and surrounding communities were shocked and frightened yesterday when two thugs, one yielding a handgun, assaulted a 90 year-old woman outside her home in Rossmoor. Stunned yesterday, residents can rest a little easier this morning.
Home and car burglaries, like anywhere else, are not uncommon in Rossmoor. But, yesterday’s crime was the first armed robbery and home invasion in years. Law enforcement in Unincorporated Rossmoor falls under the jurisdiction of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and they certainly did their job in the last 18 hours.
“Lt. Wren [OCSD’s head of Northern Division] put a lot of investigators on this case,” Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Jim Amormino told OC180NEWS. “The investigators worked throughout the night. This was a very hideous crime against a 90 year old woman. They purposefully worked around the clock and got the guy. So, the people of Rossmoor should rest a lot better now.”
OCSD’s Amormino did not yet have the name or booking photo of the suspect. The investigators made the arrest around 3:00/4:00 this morning and they went home to get a few hours sleep. The name and booking photo will be released later today. Amormino also did not yet know if any of the victim’s property was recovered.
Despite her advanced age and the extremely threatening situation – a gun to her neck – the victim was able to provide a high quality description of the suspect. Based on her description, the OCSD artist created a composite image of the bad guy and late last night it was recognized by another OCSD investigator from a Sunset Beach burglary investigation.
After the OCSD investigator recognized the composite, they were able to match it with a photo on file. The victim positively identified the suspect from a photo line up and this led to the arrest early this morning.
“I’m told his photo and the composite look exactly alike,” Amormino told OC180NEWS. “She positively identified him, they went to his residence in Long Beach – he’s a parolee with a criminal record – and placed him under arrest.”
Amormino said the suspect arrested was the one with the handgun. The second suspect is still outstanding.
