Los Alamitos Unified Board of Education Approves Labor Contracts

At last night’s Board of Education meeting for the Los Alamitos Unified School District, the labor contracts for the current school year were announced. While there were not any significant changes, solidifying the labor agreements is an important step for the District and the unions.

As expected, the agreement eliminates the furlough days which were part of the school calendar for the two previous years. So, there will not be any furlough days this school year. The bargaining also left unchanged all non-compensation items such as class size, and staff development days.

In addition, the agreements call for no wage increases, no additional steps or columns in the teacher compensation matrix, and no change to health and welfare benefits. The agreements were ratified by the unions on November 1, 2011.

The agreements cover only the current school year. Negotiations for new agreements covering the next school year will begin in a few months. The agreements were anticipated in the District’s current year budget, so approval of the union agreements will not require any budget changes.

The labor contracts cover 377 represented employees at an average total compensation cost of $101,000 per employee. The total compensation cost for the school year is $38 million.

The Los Alamitos Unified School District serves nearly 10,000 students in Seal Beach, Rossmoor, and Los Alamitos. The district includes Los Alamitos High School, a full service high school, Laurel High School, a continuation high school, McAuliffe Middle School, Oak Middle School, and six elementary schools. Mrs. Karen Russell is the current President of the Board of Education. Dr. Sherry Kropp is the Superintendant of the Los Alamitos Unified School District.
