Newsletter From Seal Beach Councilwoman Ellery Deaton

Submitted by Ellery Deaton, City Council Member, District 1, City of Seal Beach.

Dear Friends,
November is upon us and Thanksgiving is not far away. While we are still working through the wakes of grief and reconstruction in the aftermath of October 12th, this newsletter will address other things going on in town you may be interested in.

Ocean Alley Construction
Construction of the Ocean Avenue Alley is now underway. The contractor completed all work between 13th and14th Street which includes replacing the water and sewer lines and constructing concrete pavement. They are now working the alley between 12th and 13th Street. Once completed, they will move onto the alleys toward Main Street one block at a time.

DWP Draft EIR to be released Monday
Monday, November 14th, the draft EIR on the DWP property will be released. Due to the holidays, the comment period is also being extended through January 9, 2012, extending the comment period to 90 days rather than 45. Copies will be available for public review at both the Library, and City Hall. In addition to hard copies being available at those locations, it will be posted as soon as possible after release on the City’s website: sealbeach.gov.

Development at 2nd and PCH
On October 12, the Long Beach Planning Commission voted unanimously to certify the EIR and on a 4-3 vote, voted to amend the SEADIP (specific plan) zoning to allow development of the project (the current zoning for this area does not allow residential development, nor does it allow building heights anywhere near those that are being proposed).
The item will come back before the Planning Commission on November 17 for entitlements (use permits, site plan review, etc.). After the Planning Commission, the zoning amendments will need to be approved by the City Council and the entitlement package will certainly be appealed to the Council.

Call for Airplanes off Flight Plan
Congressman Rohrabacher met with me, the Mayor and Jill Ingram, our City Manager to see what can be done to stop JetBlue from flying over the residential areas of our city upon landing at Long Beach Airport. The traditional approach has been over the Navy Base and then down Westminster Blvd., but JetBlue has found it saves them fuel and time to short cut the flight by flying over our homes. While the Congressman works on the problem, we can continue working on it ourselves by calling and writing the airport and the airline whenever we notice a plane flying over our residential homes. Please make a note of the time and the offending airline, then call:
Long Beach Airport Noise Complaint Number: (562) 570-2665
and write or call:
JetBlue:

Yours,
