On Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at approximately 1:21 pm, the Seal Beach Police Department received a 911 call regarding gunshots being fired in the area of 500 PCH, Suite 100 – the Salon Meritage.
As Seal Beach Police Department officers arrived on scene, witnesses directed officers towards a vehicle that was leaving the scene as being involved in the shooting. Seal Beach officers conducted a traffic stop at which time a male subject was detained without resistance or incident.
Simultaneously, Seal Beach officers entered Salon Meritage and observed nine gunshot victims. Members of the Orange County Fire Authority and Huntington Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and provided life saving measures.
Of the nine victims, six were fatally wounded inside of the salon (1 male victim and 5 female victims). Three were transported to a local trauma center. Two of these victims succumbed to their injuries (1 male and 1 female) at the hospital. The surviving female gunshot victim is in critical condition.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident. He was later identified as Scott Evans Dekraai, 42 years of age and a resident of Huntington Beach. Dekraai faces multiple counts of murder – PC 187. The motive of the shooting is still under investigation.
A family support center was established at the Mary Wilson Library in downtown Seal Beach where crisis counselors and police personnel worked closely with family members seeking information about those who were in the salon at the time of the shooting.
The Seal Beach Police Department was assisted by numerous cities, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
