Online Managerial Job Postings Fall In September

The 9 point August up tick in nationwide managerial recruitment activity now looks like a spike in the data, rather than the start of a new upward trend. The index resumed its downward trajectory in September by falling 5 points, according to the new CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index.

This survey has tracked since July 2009 online managerial job postings in 30 major metropolitan areas across the country. Four California areas – Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Riverside – are included in the survey.

The scores represent the per capita online managerial job postings for each area. Since the index values are on a per capita basis, job availability comparisons can be made among cities of different population sizes.

The September 2011 Index fell to 102.6, down from 107.6 in August 2011.

“The good news is that these are the strongest September hiring levels since we started the Index in 2008,” says Jay Martin, COO, JobSerf. “Even with the economic turmoil in the U.S. and Europe, managerial hiring has held up fairly well.”

All four California cities in the survey had lower job postings during September. Like last month, Los Angeles experienced the smallest decrease. The index for LA fell from 50 in August, to 49 for September. This is the lowest level of job postings for Los Angeles since March when the index was 45.

The index for San Diego fell out of second place among California cities into a tie with Los Angeles at 49. This is the first time San Diego has not been ahead of Los Angeles. Even more, the fall for San Diego has been steeper than LA.

In April of this year, San Diego’s index of managerial job postings was at 69, the highest ever for San Diego. Since April, it has fallen back steadily and now stands at its lowest level since February 2010.

San Francisco, with an index value of 111, remains the city with the third most jobs per capita in the country. Washington DC is first and Boston is second. The drop from 114 in August for San Francisco is similar to the reduction in the national average.

Riverside has been at the bottom of the rankings since the beginning of the survey and the August data is no different. The Inland Empire city’s job postings fell from 22 in August, to 21 for September. Riverside has been losing job postings since the index hit its high of 25 in June. The current level of 21 is the lowest since March 2011.
