Coast Guard medevacs woman on the verge of giving birth

LOS ANGELES – The Coast Guard medevaced a woman in her 20s after she began going into early labor on Catalina Island, Calif., around 6:30 a.m., this morning.

Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles launched a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter with a flight surgeon onboard to pick up the woman due to possible life-threatening birth complications.

Shortly after take-off from Avalon Harbor, the woman quickly went into labor forcing the helicopter to change destinations from Long Beach Memorial Hospital to Long Beach Airport. The Coast Guard flight surgeon began preparing to deliver the baby mid-air after the woman’s water broke.

Upon arrival at the airport, it was determined that there was enough time to transport the woman by ambulance to LBM Hospital. The woman was transferred to an awaiting ambulance at the airport and rushed to the hospital.
