Andrew Garton became the first officer in the Hawthorne Police Department’s 89-year history to die in the line of duty when he and El Segundo police Sgt. Rex Fowler collided in Torrance while escorting a funeral procession for Manhattan Beach police Officer Mark Vasquez.
Vasquez, 36, died of cancer last month. Fowler is recovering from surgeries for a broken leg.
Donations for Officer Andrew Garton’s family can be made at the Hawthorne police station at 12501 S. Hawthorne Blvd., or sent to or dropped off at Western Federal Credit Union, 14500 S. Aviation Blvd., Hawthorne, 90250. Checks should be made out to HPOA, c/o Officer Andrew Garton’s family, account No. 654404-006.
Now through June 24, 2011 enjoy a meal at Ruby’s and support a local family who lost their father/husband recently. RUBY’S Diner in Long Beach (2nd st. & PCH) is donating toward the Andrew Garton Memorial.
Andrew tragically lost his life while escorting a fallen Manhatten PD Officer. Andrew’s family resides in Rossmoor and is still highly involved in the community.
I am asking everyone to pass this along to your contacts and please help support this family.
