Ellery Deaton Wins Seal Beach City Council Runoff In Landslide

(Note: This article has been corrected to indicate that Ellery Deaton will not take her seat on the council until February 28, 2011. Our thanks to Robert Goldberg for pointing out our error. According to Deputy City Clerk Anita Chapanond, there is a 21 day waiting period between election results certification and when the candidate is seated.)

The Seal Beach City Clerk tonight announced unofficial results for the city council runoff election for the District 1 seat. The seat was held by Charles Antos who was term limited out. District 1 includes the Old Town and Surfside areas of Seal Beach.

Since no candidate won at least 50% of the vote in the November general election, the top two vote getters faced off in a runoff held today. The election was mail-in only and the votes were tabulated in the city council chambers tonight.

Ellery Deaton received total votes of 826, or 61.6%. Joe Kalmick got 514, or 38.4% of the total 1,340 votes cast. The results will be certified at a special city council meeting on Feburary1, 2011. Deaton won five of the six precincts.

The existing District One representative, Charles Antos, will hold the seat until the beginning of the February 28, 2011 meeting, at which time Deaton will be sworn in and take her seat.

Congratulations to Councilmember elect Ellery Deaton.
