Just as the Rossmoor Predator Management Team was releasing this newsletter, the group reported yet another pet killing.
“It was in the grass towards the Silver Fox side of Rush Park,” RPMT member David Lara told OC180NEWS. “There was just a couple of white paws and some innards. The dog was probably 10-12 pounds.”
Lara’s wife Rebecca, also an RPMT member, tracks lost pets in Rossmoor and tries to reconnect pets with their owners.
But as of last night, they were not able to find a match for the latest victim. “We don’t have any reports of lost dogs that match it,” Lara told us. He said they would look for lost dog postings and see if they could find a match.
Although the group imagines the little dog with white paws was the victim of a coyote, there is no way to know for sure. “That’s just an assumption,” said Lara. The RPMT continues to urge vigilance. “Please remember we still have coyotes out there and to keep pets inside, with dog tags so if they are lost they can be easily identified and returned to you,” the group said in an emailed statement.
The following is the RPMT January Newsletter, provided to OC180NEWS by Dave and Rebecca Lara.
ROSSMOOR RPMT HISTORY!
The original RPMT was started over ten years ago by Shirley Bailey, Jim & Patty Alexander. They called themselves the “Concerned Citizens Group”. Upon finding dead pet carcasses at both Rush & Rossmoor Parks, Shirley started statistics on animal deaths. Neighbors started telling one another about the group and reporting attacks and deaths. Jim & Patty Alexander obtained a permit from Orange County for Rossmoor which is still used today to hang banners. They also were the first to make and hang banners at all entry ways into Rossmoor. They all serve on the Rossmoor Predator Management Team today and provide their expert advice. Thank you Shirley, Jim & Patty for keeping Rossmoor safe for kids and pets!
AIR HORNS FROM JIM & PATTY ALEXANDER
The Alexanders have donated air horns to be given to families experiencing coyote activity. Residents have had coyotes enter their yards and attack their pets. Those of you wishing to obtain an air horn, email REBTRAVIS@AOL.com and one will be delivered to you courtesy of the Alexanders. Anyone wishing to make a donation upon receipt of their air horn can do so by sending their $8.00 check to Tom Thomas, Treasurer, Rossmoor Homeowners’ Association, P.O. Box 5058, Rossmoor, CA 90721-5058.
LET’S INVITE THEM BACK – SHALL WE? (COYOTE BIO)
Aside from the most recent killing which occurred in January, Rossmoor has experienced very little coyote activity these last two months. As a community we have experienced 33 pet deaths with the majority of them occurring in backyards and a female resident being attacked. In driving around Rossmoor we observed several residents offering open invitations to invite coyotes back to Rossmoor by leaving trash cans open compacted with trash bags from discarded left overs. Please, remember to keep trash tightly covered and pets, especially cats indoors when you are unable to supervise them outdoors.
O.C. PUBLIC WORKS – JOB WELL DONE!
RPMT would like to congratulate all the employees at O.C. Public Works and their bosses which would include John Moorlach, Rick Francis, Jess Carbajal, Ignacio Ochoa, Victor Valdovinos and Don McPeck for using Rossmoor to test coyote grates. The grates have been lifted during the storms and returned to block coyote travel after the rains have ended. Rossmoor is extremely grateful for everyone’s hard work and efforts.
ROSSMOOR COMMUNITY SERVICE DISTRICT HAS THE POWER!
RCSD has the powers over Rossmoor’s Parks, streets and sidewalks. We ask residents to report any of these unsafe areas of risen and uneven sidewalk to RCSD at 562 430-3707 or by emailing: rcsd@rossmoor_csd.org.
On That Note:
Dear RCSD:
Could you please report the two pot holes on St. Cloud between Yellowtail and Rowena Drive? They are growing bigger and bigger. Thanks Jessica & Liz for all your help!
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE COYOTE TRAPPING AND OUR DONATIONS?
We felt we should address this with team members as many of you have asked individually what happened with the coyote trapping and your donations that you chipped in. In November, after one dog had been injured and another killed, team members demanded and Rick Francis suggested that we immediately take a collection to hire a trapper. Since having 33 killings for 2010, RPMT believed that if Rossmoor Residents “chipped in” we would have the County, Rossmoor Homeowner’s Association and immediately execute and obtain the service of a coyote trapper for $5,000. Unfortunately, RPMT has been advised by RHA President Milt Houghton, that the coyote trapper has requested RHA to be an additional third party to the contract for liability purposes. RHA’s insurance expert is reviewing this language to ensure adequate liability insurance coverage for RHA. As such, no contract has been entered into by the parties.
Thus, any team member that has donated to RHA for “coyote trapping” and wish to have their money returned to them, please contact Tom Thomas, Treasurer, Rossmoor Homeowners’ Association, email: tlt77777@verizon.net to request your donation be refunded to you. Your donations will otherwise be saved for future coyote deterrent for Rossmoor.
It’s extremely disappointing Rossmoor residents have “chipped in” and yet, contract negotiations over $5,000 have not been resolved. Hopefully, RCSD will be able to help with next year’s coyote issues. I would like to personally apologize to all of you thinking that if we chipped in, we could have trapping commenced shortly.
THE GENEROSITY OF ROSSMOOR RESIDENTS TO THIEVES
RPMT was informed by O.C. Sheriff Deputies that approximately 80% of auto burglaries are due to owners leaving their cars unlocked with laptop computers, cameras, cell phones, etc. We are so generous to our thieves that some of us have even left our cars opened twice after being burglarized to be burglarized again. We were also informed that a gardener on Rowena Drive had left his truck keys on the floor of his unlocked truck. The thieves made off with all of his gardening equipment stored in the back of his truck and of course, his truck. Please let’s not entice our thieves to burglarize our cars and/or gain interest in our homes. We ask this for the protection of your family.
LOST DOGS
Please call 563 253-2330 immediately when you discover your pet missing. It is much easier to find a dog with our volunteers as opposed to the next day. We also recommend immediately posting signs where your dog was lost with its picture and who to call. RPMT will send out email alerts of your missing dog, with photo and location where it was lost. Team members upon receiving our email, will look on their block for any signs of the dog. If anyone cans suggest how we can become more efficient, we definitely want to hear from you.
ONLY $15.00 FOR DOG CHIPPING
In shopping around for dog chipping services in the Rossmoor area, we were informed by a local veterinarian office that by chipping through a shelter, costs would be lower because they receive a discount for being a shelter. The O.C. Animal Care informed us that Rossmoor has a shelter close by in Garden Grove that offers dog chipping for a flat fee of $15.00. Having your dog chipped ensures that your dog will always carry identification to be returned home to you. The shelter is located at:
Golden State Humane Society 11901 Gilbert Street Garden Grove, CA 92841
Phone: 714-638-8111 / 562-423-8406
Fax: 714-638-1826 / 562-423-3797
REWARD!
RPMT is offering a reward for the return of a silver and white terrier who was lost on Christmas Day. Description is a 5 year old grey and white Silkie Terrier and weighs 10 pounds. No questions asked, we just want to return a family member who was lost on Christmas.
FREE WALKING TRAINER
RPMT is trying to have “Bandit” a Golden Retriever/German Shepard Mix who is a very sweet little boy adopted. He is current with shots and his house trained. He just needs love and a good home. You will be walking him enjoying fresh air, meeting friends and your backside will actually reduce from not watching so much TV. Before you know it! Contact happynancy@hotmail.com to get your walking and exercise started.
DOGS SHELTERS
Susan, our team member, would like to share dog shelters with us for those who find or are trying to place dogs. She has provided this website with many listed shelters:

OH RATS!!!
In reaching John Moorlach’s Blog, he states “A November 1st memo from the District Manager of the Orange County Vector Control District noted that the vegetation removal work along the Garden Grove (22) Freeway, between Valley View Street and Seal Beach Boulevard, was stopped by CalTrans’ crews. They observed rats scurrying from the disturbed vegetation and the District responded by placing 60 rat bait stations along the three quarters of a mile stretch. The tamper-resistant bait stations will remain in place for two weeks before more vegetation is removed.”
RPMT immediately contacted the District Manager of Vector Control requesting that prior to construction of the I-405/605 and behind Martha Ann that rats be removed from CalTrans’ property. Hopefully, this would prevent rats entering homes on Martha Ann. District Manager Michael Hearst responded “We have recently become aware of the situation and have been developing a plan that will not only eliminate the rat population that is being supported on CalTrans property, but will minimize the migration of those rats to the surrounding community. Actually preparing the community will be the first step.” Vector Control Personnel will be going door-to-door on Tuesday, January 4th, commencing their public awareness campaign.
