Local Sailors Chris Raab And Dave Crockett Win Traditional Holiday-Time Regatta

Chris Raab, winner of US Sailing’s 2010 Championship of Champions, and ABYC’s Dave Crockett showed their skill Saturday by winning the 2010 Cal 20 Fun Run hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club.

This traditional end-of-the-year regatta gets its name from the fun low-key tone of the event where the local Cal 20 fleet is invited to race inside Alamitos Bay Marina where Sabots and Lidos usually sail.

However, “low-key” never ever applies to this very competitive and closely matched fleet… as Saturday’s racing action showed.

10 Cal 20s showed up for the noon start were three-minute whistle sequences are used for each race. The boats race a windward/leeward course in the close quarters of the bay, dodging power boats, electric boats and a few paddle boarders on multi-lap courses.

Raab and Crockett certainly showed that consistency is the way to win a regatta with an overall score five points ahead of second place finisher Jeff Ives and Phil Soma while only posting one first place finish.

Their consistency was also a challenge for local favorites Keith Ives and Chuck Stevens who, as a rule, dominate most of LBYC’s Wet Wednesdays races during the summer but had to settle for third in this annual holiday-time regatta.

At the end of the day as trophies were being handed out on the water and competitors sailed away to their respective docks and slips, wishes of, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” were heard from boat to boat.
