UCI Symphony Orchestra and UCI Choirs present Humperdinck’s classic fairytale opera “Hansel and Gretel” in English, December 3-5 in the Claire Trevor Theatre. Opera buffs are rejoicing at the return of opera to Orange County and to the Claire Trevor School of the Arts performance schedule.
Director Robin Buck’s new production explores the classic tale in such a way as to delight traditional opera fans as well as intrigue those who have never seen an opera. Two talented casts of students and guest artists perform with the UCI Symphony in a production that embraces the grandeur of Humperdinck’s musical score and the humor, drama and pathos of Grimm’s tale. One scene may not be suitable for young children (yes, the witch does have an appetite!). Opera stars Ana Halland (evenings) and Frances Young (matinees) alternate as the witch.
