OC180NEWS’s exclusive analysis of California Employment Development Department data indicates the number of employed people in Orange County improved again in July. But the state revised the June data and OC loss the distinction of reporting more people working every month this year.
The state first reported OC added 1,800 jobs in June. However, the data provided yesterday to OC180NEWS revised the June employment down by 2,000, thus giving OC a net loss of 200 jobs for June. Before this revision, OC could boast of adding jobs every month this year, and the original June numbers put OC as the forth highest job creating county in California.
But, according to the preliminary July employment numbers, OC gained all those jobs back and added more. The new state numbers put OC as the highest job creating county in the state for July. OC added 5,300 net new jobs last month.
This growth was just enough to push into second place Santa Clara County, which added 5,200 more working people last month.
In third place for July job growth was Sacramento , with 3,300 new jobs. In fourth place was Los Angeles County, which can swing from large losses to significant growth because of its size. LA added 3,100 new jobs and San Francisco finished off the top five with job growth of 2,900.
Although these counties added significant numbers of new jobs in July, the state in total loss jobs. According to the revised June statewide numbers, there were 23,500 fewer people working in California in July than in June. Those losses largely come from counties which are further away from the major urban centers.
Riverside County was the biggest job loser with a drop of 7,500 working people. This was followed by San Joaquin, down by 7,300 jobs, San Bernardino which loss 7,100 jobs, Sonoma, down by 4,500, and Ventura where 4,400 less people were working.
These five counties account for total job losses of 30,800. Another 30 counties also loss jobs, but the big gainers held down statewide losses to 23,500.
Not only is OC the top job producing county in July, it also has created the most jobs since the end of last year. So far this year, OC has added 35,100 new jobs. In second place is Monterey with 26,100 more jobs.
Third place for year to date job creation is San Diego, which has added 25,500 jobs. Even though Fresno lost jobs in July, they still held the fourth year to date slot with 14,700 new jobs and with strong July growth, Santa Clara is fifth year to date with 13,500 more working people.
