New Adult Care Clinic Opens in Cypress Tomorrow

Friday, 10/30/09 will be the grand opening of a new adult care clinic at 5175 Ball Road in Cypress. To those responsible for the care of an elderly parent or grand parent, this new outpatient facility could be helpful. The Cypress mayor, Doug Bailey, state senator Tom Harman, and Castulo de la Rocha, President & CEO of AltaMed Health Services Corporation, are expected to be on hand for the 10:00 am opening ceremony.

Officially called Adult Day Health Care, ADHC, the center is designed to provide adults 18 years and older support to maintain or enhance their medical, functional or mental status through health and human services. Services offered at the center include nursing care, individual counseling, nutritional meals, physical, occupational and speech therapies, recreational activities, transportation to and from the center, emotional support for caregivers, health education classes and community resources.

These services are geared to helping seniors maintain their independence and remain in their homes, rather than moving into a long term care facility. A senior who has some medical conditions and needs daily help, can be picked up from their home and taken to the center for a half day. Once at the center, they can get their clinical care, they do exercises, have a meal, socialize, and be driven back home. The transportation services cover up to 5 miles from the center.

The services and frequency of visits depends on the person’s medical condition and needs. Some seniors might visit the center as much as five days a week. This could allow a working age person who is also responsible for the daily care of an elderly person, the available time to work or pursue their other activities.

The 6,528 square foot newly renovated center is designed to handle 62 seniors. It is open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

The new facility is operated by AltaMed Health Services Corporation, a private nonprofit organization based in Commerce. The company is a major provider of health and human services and the largest Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in the State of California. AltaMed’s mission is to provide high quality, coordinated, comprehensive health and human services to the underserved in Southern California.

AltaMed began as the East Los Angeles Barrio Free Clinic in 1969, a volunteer-staff storefront providing basic medical services. Today AltaMed’s service area extends beyond East Los Angeles to the Greater Los Angeles area and Orange County.
